Disney announced on Wednesday that they had selected the singer, Halle Bailey to play the role of Ariel in their live-action remake of” The Little Mermaid.”
The news has fans of Halle on social media very thrilled and very excited about what’s to come.
“As black creators, we know how isolating this industry can be,” Nilah Magruder, a Los Angeles-based illustrator and animator told BuzzFeed News. “To see a black Ariel now is particularly inspiring.”
“I was kind of like, Whoa, Disney really went and did that!” she told BuzzFeed News.
Bailey is one half of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle. Sister who are signed to Beyonce’s label, parkwood Entertainment. Bailey is also a star on ABC’s Grown-ish.
Bailey is the only member of the cast to be announced so far for the movie, which isn’t due to go into production until next year.
According to Buzzfeed, Director Rob Marshall said there had been “extensive search” for the right actor to play Ariel, and that Bailey was the perfect choice.
“It was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” he said.
